RABINDRANATH TAGORE (1861-1941) was the greatest writter in modern Indian literature, poet, novelist, composer, artist and educator. Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet. He composed fifty odd volumes of poetry. Gitanjali : Song Offerings (1912), is his most acclaimed collection of poems. He was born in 1861 in Calcutta, India.
Tagore's major plays are Raja (1910) [The King of the Dark Chamber], Dakghar (1912) [The Post Office]. He is the author of several volumes of short stories and a number of novels, among them Gora (1910), Ghare-Baire (1916) [The Home and the World]. Besides these, he wrote musical dramas, dance dramas, essays of all types, travel diaries, and two autobiographies, one in his middle years and the other shortly before his death in 1941. In the annals of the Indian literature, Rabindranath Tagore is one name that will always remain the biggest and etched in everyone's mind in the years to come.
An icon of Bengali culture, he influenced writters in all Indian languages, as well as many Western authors, after he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.
In 1912 Macmillan (London) printed his first book of self-translations, Gitanjali, which unexpectedly earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature, making him an instant international celebrity.
Tagore published nearly 60 volumes of poems (including a few for children), generally featuring an unique metaphysical strain grounded in Bengal's landscape. His short stories are a blend of colloquial diction and new verse forms and metres.
In his short stories (a genre he introduced in Bengali), Tagore analyses socio-political problems realistically. Tagore's short stories consist of designs and plots that touch your heart deep inside and present the world of pre-independence in the most beautiful form.
